Backflow Prevention & Testing

Backflow in your pipes should be continually monitored at your business. Backflow testing is another area of expertise by Pipe Doctor Plumbing. Most areas in Ohio, including Toledo, require continuous testing in properties to make sure it is safe and free from contamination.

What Is Backflow?

Backflow occurs when the normal flow of water in your pipes reverses due to a drop in pressure or a broken pipe. This could lead to harmful contaminants entering your clean water supply. To prevent this, commercial properties must have a reliable backflow prevention system that is regularly tested to ensure it remains effective.

Why Should Your Business Be Concerned?

According to the Ohio EPA, backflow can pose a potential health risk. Contaminated water entering your commercial facility's water supply can lead to severe issues including chemical burns, fires, explosions, poisonings, illness and death. Business owners and managers are responsible for implementing a backflow prevention system to prevent these hazards and are to comply with state regulations. Potential risks in commercial settings can arise from various sources, such as sprinkler systems, chemical processing equipment, and HVAC systems, making backflow prevention crucial.

What Actions Should You Take?

The Ohio EPA recommends that you become aware of backflow and take action on preventing it. Your business should install a testable backflow prevention system and have it tested regularly. It is the consumer/homeowner's responsibility, and in some areas of Ohio, it is required by law to have and monitor a backflow prevention system. Compliance is not only a legal obligation but also a critical measure to protect public health and reputation.

At Pipe Doctor Plumbing, our expert technicians are certified to test and install Back Flow Check Valves in both Commercial and Residential properties. Our technicians combine their vast knowledge and the latest tools and techniques to ensure that your back flow prevention devices are operating properly.

Testing and Maintenance Protocols We Monitor

Ohio regulations require annual testing of backflow prevention devices by our certified team of professionals to ensure proper function and no contamination.

Pressure Testing: We provide this service to confirm that the device is maintaining the necessary pressure differentials. The Ohio EPA advises that during testing, the pressure drop across each check valve in DCVAs should not exceed 1.0, ensuring that they are effective.

Valve Inspection: Regular inspections are critical for identifying issues such as debris build-up or mechanical wear. In the case that the valves are damaged, this may compromise the effectiveness of the device. Routine inspections prevent failures that may have gone unnoticed.

System Calibration: Proper calibration ensures that backflow prevention devices function correctly. This service is important for systems that may experience frequent fluctuations in their pressure levels.

What is the difference between a backflow preventer and a RPZ?

A Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) lets you know that the valve is working properly.

RPZ backflow preventers consist of two independent check valves. They work like a double-check backflow preventer, but they also have an intermediate relief valve that opens to atmosphere if both check valves should fail.
